I produce technical texts in English, usually based upon a German original. Brochures, catalogues, websites, press releases, repair and maintenance manuals, PRDs, tenders and invitations to tender, and much more. I’m your contact for written technical communication in English.
Being your contact means that I’m accessible and approachable. Customer contact is an important part of the value creation process, because to produce a good result – meaning an English text that is effective and fulfils its purpose – I need to know what you’re trying to achieve. This may be obvious from the text, but it shouldn’t be taken as a given.
I therefore attach great importance to facilitating a close working relationship with my customers. Increasingly, translation work is contracted and subcontracted further, which is not conducive to this relationship. Ultimately, it leads to the impression that translations are obtained “from the Internet”, just as water comes “out of the tap”.
I challenge this assumption, and value contact with the users of my translations and authors of the texts upon which they are based, wherever that contact is possible.
